An automatic transmission is an automobile gearbox that can change gear ratios automatically as the vehicle moves, freeing the driver from having to shift gears manually. Similar but larger devices are also used for heavy-duty commercial and industrial vehicles and equipment. The following Automatic Transmission system manual applies for Toyota Automobile series including Lexus ES300, GS300, LS400, SC300 & SC400 and Toyota Camry, Celica, Corolla, Land Cruiser, MR2, Paseo, Pickup, Supra, Tercel & 4Runner.
Transmission is equipped with a electronically controlled shift lock and key lock system. Shift lock system prevents shift lever from being moved from Park unless brake pedal is depressed. In case of a malfunction, shift lever can be released by
depressing shift lock override button, located near shift lever. Key lock system prevents ignition key from being moved from ACC to LOCK position on ignition switch unless shift lever is in Park.

Just want to say thanks. I was ready to shoot my Paseo and throw it over a cliff. Something went wrong with the wiring and it activated an alarm I never knew I had. A friend removed the alarm system but apparently it did something to the shift lock. I couldn’t get hold of him so I looked up info on transmissions and here was the answer! Worked like a charm…the override button was the way to go! You have saved me endless grief and high repair expenses. At least I have time to get this looked at.
